What is Source Reduction?
Each Minnesotan generates an average of 2000 pounds of garbage per year - that's one ton per person! When you avoid making garbage in the first place, you don't have to worry about disposing of waste or recycling it later. Changing your habits it the key - think about ways you can reduce waste when you shop, work and play. There's a ton of ways for you to reduce waste, save yourself some time and money and be good to the Earth at the same time.
How do I reduce the amount of garbage I generate?
- Reduce your paper waste - call the Solid Waste Division for a Junk Mail Reduction pamphlet
- Buy durable, reusable products with the least amount of packaging necessary
- Buy only what you need in sizes you can use up
- Donate unwanted items that are still useable
- Compost your food waste
- Recycle what you can
