Death Certificates

Minnesota death certificates from 1997 to present are available at any courthouse in Minnesota. In addition, the Morrison County Recorder’s Office has death records from 1870 to 1996 for deaths which occurred in Morrison County. Contact the county of death for deaths prior to 1997. Certified copies of death records can only be issued to parties demonstrating a tangible interest in the record.

  • When applying in person a death request form needs to be competed and a current photo ID presented.
  • When applying by mail a notarized death request form needs to be completed and returned along with the appropriate fees.
  • For your convenience, you can process online requests through an independent company that Morrison County Recorder has partnered with to provide you this service; VitalChek Network Inc.  VitalChek can be reached through their website; (**vitalchek URL).  An additional fee is charged by VitalChek for this service, and all major credit cards are accepted, including American Express®, Discover®, MasterCard® or Visa®.  The notarized death request form must be faxed to our office 320-632-0141 to complete the Vitalchek order.

*Notice:  US Passport and Minnesota Birth and Death Certificate Services

In an effort to strengthen the security and integrity of the passport issuance process, the US Dept of State and National Passport Services have implemented a policy for all dual function offices, effective May 1, 2011.  Under this policy, the Recorder’s office cannot overlap duties between the Passport Acceptance Program and issuance of birth/death certificates.  The federal agencies see a conflict between the two services.

If you need to apply for a passport or a birth/death certificate, you may continue to visit the Recorder’s Office any time Monday thru Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm.  There should not be a problem obtaining these services, but because of vacation and/or sick days and the separation of duty policy, it may benefit you to call ahead to assure availability of staff to process your request.  (320-632-0146)

It is our continued commitment to provide the public with the best service possible in obtaining their birth/death certificates and passports in an efficient and timely manner.
